Can I choose what seafood I receive?

Like a CSA, our mission is to help you eat what is freshly harvested and best supports our fishing community, so choice is limited. You will often be able to select from the "catch-of-the-week" or a few "upgrade" options provided including ready-to-cook pre-marinated fish or premium seafood such as lobsters. If you choose "catch-of-the-week" or don't make a selection, we let you know in an e-newsletter one day before your delivery what the week's selection will be.

We work with a different fisherman each week to buy one type of seafood for the week's deliveries (catch-of-the-week). We aim for variety week to week. When weather is really bad and none of the fishermen we work  with across Southern and Central CA are able to safely fish, we sometimes have to send out frozen fish instead of fresh, or partner with other fishermen out of state that meet our strict sustainability standards.

Check our Species Table to see what you are likely to get. Along with this catch of the week item the we choose for you, you are able to choose to add-on specific items from our available fresh and frozen inventory.

Can I opt-out of species I don't like?

Yes. If you don't like or can't eat certain types of seafood, you can tailor your subscription by indicating 'opt-outs'. You will receive an alternative seafood item whenever one of you opt-out species is our main share of the week. This alternative will be something you have not opted out of, and can be fresh of freshly frozen.

Below the list of things you can opt out of:

  • - Small fish (mackerel, sardine, herring and anchovies)
  • - Black Cod a.k.a Sablefish
  • - Shark* (sustainably caught as bycatch and really delicious!)
  • - Swordfish*
  • - Oysters
  • - Mussels
  • - Clams
  • - Crab
  • - Lobster
  • - Shrimp
  • - Squid
  • - Abalone
  • - Kellet's Whelk (escargot of the sea!)

*Not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women or young children due to mercury levels

Certain fish cannot be opted out of, like halibut or rockfish, because they are staples of our local catch. We hope you will try our recipes and find preparations with these species that you enjoy, or give unwanted fish to a friend or neighbor to enjoy.

If you are unwilling to try what we send you, please email us asap and we will do our best to provide a substitute.

We encourage our members to try our full variety and if you do not like an item you can then add it to your list of opt-outs. Because our seafood is so fresh, you can be pleasantly surprised that you like something you thought you didn't.

How can I modify my opt-out list?

Your opt-out list can be modified any time in your Farmigo account. Log-in and click the Change button next to the word Subscription, in the right-side Summary rectangle. Click on the Options tab and scroll to the name of the opt-out species. Select the delivery schedule you are on and click add and save. Or email us at info@gethookedseafood.com and we will do it for you.

What if I miss my pick-up?

Almost all pick-up hosts offer ‘missed pick-up hours’ that begin upon store opening on the next day. Check missed pick up hours here.
  • If you are unable to pick up your seafood yourself, you are encouraged to send a friend to get it on your behalf, or to take it home themselves.
  • If you do not pick up your seafood by the end of the 'missed pick up hours', it will be donated to the pick up site host.
  • If you have not paused your delivery schedule by the deadline of 9 pm on Monday prior to your delivery, you cannot receive a refund for the week’s seafood.
  • If you have a hectic schedule, you might consider switching to home delivery instead! Just email info@gethookedseafood.com to ask to switch. Deliveries range from $3-8.
How long will my seafood keep?
  • Your seafood will often keep for 3-5 days in the refrigerator and can be frozen for later. The exact use by date will be indicated on the label.

  • We always provide detailed instructions for items like shrimp or oysters so you know how to handle the seafood to preserve quality. Our email newsletter also always includes an eat by or freeze by date, and any special storage or preparation. You can always call or email if you are unsure what to do!

  • Most often, your seafood was caught 1-3 days before delivery. You can’t get it any fresher than this unless you catch it yourself!

  • It is important to keep your seafood chilled during transport. We recommend using a small ice pack with your cooler bag.

  • If the seafood feels cool to the touch after less than 30 min transport, it can be considered chilled.

What if I can’t find my share in the cooler?
  • First, check the cooler a second time. Sometimes bags sitting close to the walls or corners blend in or a bag gets covered by ice, so use your hand to sift through the ice a bit to discover any hidden or hard to see bags.

  • Make sure your name is on the checklist that accompanies the cooler. If you name is there, all products listed by your name should be in the cooler(s) for you. They may not be right next to each other in the cooler.

  • If you still can't find one or more of your items, please contact us as soon as possible: 805-209-2019 or email info@gethookedseafood.com. Most of the time, we do track down your seafood and you can still get it. If you wait until after pick up hours and the next day missed pick up hours end before contacting us about missing seafood, we cannot help you or replace your seafood.

When will I know what seafood I am getting for the week?

The day before your delivery we send our newsletter letting your know your catch-of-the-week species. In this email we include recipes, the fishing boat and method, and other fun ocean-themed info for you.

Also follow us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for announcements about the catch of the week, fun photos and educational info.

How can I add additional seafood to my delivery?

Order from the Special Order Store to add additional items or increase the amount of your main catch of the week item.

Click on the 'Shop Now' button on our home page and follow the link. Add as many items as you want, up until the midnight deadline the night before your delivery day. Items will be bundled with your catch-of-the-week share in the cooler.

Look for an email receipt to know that the order went though. The cost will be deducted from our account balance.

There is always a limited amount of the items we offer in our Special Order, we have the policy of 'first come, first served'. We will notify you via email as soon as possible if we are not able to fulfill your order.

When do I find out what's available for Special Ordering?

Here's our weekly routine for updating you about what's available for Special Orders:

Friday prior to your next delivery, we send an email announcing what items are available for Special Order that week. These may be fresh or frozen seafood, house-made prepared seafood dishes, like tuna burgers or lobster bisque, and other specialty items. Other locally-made pantry items, like olive oil are also offered.

Monday mornings, once we know what fresh catch is coming in, we update the Special Order Store and send you a text message with a link to order.

One day prior to your delivery you will receive your catch-of-the-week newsletter, and this also has an updated list of special order items.

One evening before your delivery you will get a text message reminder to pick up your seafood the next day, and the link to the Special Order Store will be included there too.

How can I make changes to my special orders?

Please email info@gethookedseafood.com if you want to make edit or delete items you've ordered after you have submitted your order. Or, you can place an additional order in the store.

How do I get my seafood?

You can either enroll in our Home Delivery Service or choose one of our pick-up locations to your convenience. See all options here.

For Home Delivery, we drop your seafood in a cooler bag with ice on your door-step. Please provide any special instructions for how to access your property or where to leave the seafood. We provide a cooler bag each week, and we ask that you put your last week's cooler bag out, the morning of your delivery so we can retrieve it when we drop your next delivery. You will get a text message reminder to do this the evening before your delivery. Each month, we take a tally of additional tote bags and charge $5 per extra small tote and $25 per extra large tote. We will refund that $5/$25 upon return of additional totes, or you are free to keep them! For large orders like spiny lobster, our large insulated tote bags require a $25 fee if they are not returned the following week.

For pick-ups, the evening before your pick-up, you will receive a text reminder to pick up your seafood. Go to the pick up site you selected during sign-up (make sure to check pick up hours). Take your portion of fish from the Get Hooked cooler, labeled with your name. Check your name off the list from our clipboard.

We provide you with one free insulated tote bag to take your seafood home in. Please use it each week. You will find the bag labeled with your name on it at the pick up site on your first delivery day. For many pick-up locations, we also have a dry-goods bag next to the fish cooler. Your pantry items will be available in that bag labeled with your name as well.

How do I cancel my subscription?

We ask that you try out a minimum commitment of 4 deliveries. However, if you encounter extenuating circumstances, we will refund your money prior to 4 deliveries.

To cancel please call (805) 209-2019 or email us at info@gethookedseafood.com. We will reply as soon as possible asking to please fill in our cancellation-feedback survey. If you have a remaining balance in your account, please fill in the survey to initiate a refund.

You are financially responsible for all deliveries made until you contact us to cancel your subscription and close your account.

How can I skip a delivery or pause my delivery schedule?

You can skip your week’s delivery by setting your account on hold not later than 9 pm Monday prior to your delivery.

  • - Log in to your account.
  • - Click on the 'Delivery Hold' tab on the upper left side of the page.
  • - Click into the 'From' and 'To' boxes and select the dates you wish to pause your deliveries.
  • - Finally, click 'Save'. You'll receive an email confirming your hold, and the date of your next scheduled delivery.

You can also email us at info@gethookedseafood.com before 9 pm on Monday indicating the days you want to stop our service. If you email us later than this, we will try to accommodate you, but cannot guarantee it.

What if I don’t know what to do with the seafood I receive?
  • We provide recipes, and preparation instructions and videos in our newsletter and on our website. Check them out and get inspired!

  • If you are unhappy with the outcome of your seafood dish, please contact us right away and we will work with you to make up for it or suggest new recipes or techniques to try. Get Hooked is all about making sure you love your seafood, explore new recipes and expand your seafood repertoire!

Can I get a reminder on my delivery day?

Yes! We will text you a reminder, which will go to the primary number listed on your account. If you aren't receiving our texts, please fill out and submit this form to make sure we have the right number in our system.

I am pregnant. Should I eat seafood?

Eating seafood when pregnant contributes to intelligent, healthy and calm children. Studies have shown an increased verbal IQ of 7.5 points in children whose mothers ate seafood during pregnancy. Children of seafood-eating moms also had lower hyperactivity. Pregnant women DO want to avoid eating fish high in mercury, which includes the large fish like shark, some tuna, swordfish and king mackerel. Feel free to contact us to opt out of these species if you are pregnant or breast feeding or hoping to be soon.

How frequently do you deliver?

We deliver once a week on Wednesday and Thursdays. You can choose to set a hold on your delivery whenever you wish.

What kinds of seafood can I expect seasonally?

You can see our seasonal seafood table to see what you are likely to get based on the time of the year. Halibut, tuna, sea bass, rockfish, mussels, oysters, shrimp and salmon are some of our most common items.

We provide as much variety as possible. You can maximize your variety with a weekly delivery, rather than the bi-weekly (every other week) option.

Species availability is highly variable based on weather, season, regulations, market, pricing, and fishing vessels maintenance schedules.

Do you offer a whole fish option?

No. We aren't able to offer a whole fish option for the time being. We offer a 'fish head' share that you can add to your delivery and often have fish collars by special order.
